One of My Favorite Daily Rituals for Glowing Skin & Energy
Beginning the day with intention is my version of luxury. Before the noise begins and I can just be. Me with my book or my journal. The warm, golden glow of the early morning sun shining through the blinds. And my ginger shots.
These ginger and turmeric glow shots are a daily ritual that bring out your skin’s natural radiance and awaken your system from within. Connecting us to the women who understood that the body, tended from within, will reveal its radiance outwardly.
So what do these shots do for our gut, skin and energy?
Powerful Allies for Skin & Energy
At the root of glowing skin is not just what you apply on the outside, but what you consume.
Both ginger and turmeric have been used for centuries for their healing properties, and now modern research continues to support what traditional practices have always known: when inflammation decreases, our glow increases.
In the botanical world, we can think of ginger and turmeric as cousins. Earthy and ancient, both roots carry compounds that modern science has spent some years trying to fully understand.
Ginger
Ginger's bioactive compounds stimulate circulation, ignite digestion, and carry a gentle heat that moves energy through the body. That flush you feel after a shot is the blood flowing more freely due to improved circulation, which leads to brighter more radiant skin. The natural compounds in ginger also help to reduce internal inflammation.
Turmeric
Curcumin is the active compound in turmeric that gives it that beautiful hue and also happens to be one of the most studied natural anti-inflammatory compounds on earth. Chronic low-grade inflammation is the answer behind dull skin, sluggish digestion and low energy. When you are looking to support skin health, this matters enormously. Inflammation is one of the primary drivers of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and congestion. Turmeric also supports liver function, which is critical for clear skin as well as vibrant energy.
Your gut and skin are talking
Glowing skin is deeper than what we see. It is the visible evidence of a body that is hydrated, nourished, and free from the heavy burden of excess inflammation. The gut-skin axis describes the two way communication between your gastrointestinal system and your skin health. A compromised gut microbiome can be the reason behind conditions like eczema, acne, rosacea, and premature aging. A ginger and turmeric shot every morning works on various layers to give us that glow that we all want.
Curcumin has been shown to calm redness, ease the cycle of hormonal breakouts, and reduce the oxidative stress that accelerates skin aging. It also has the ability to protect existing collagen from free radical damage and support a healthy gut (where nutrient absorption actually happens).
Ginger's vasodilating properties improve circulation which means more blood, so more oxygen and nutrients as well, reaching skin cells. This is what we call that “glow”. Ginger is also a gentle stimulant for the lymphatic system, helping the body to clear waste more efficiently. Less congestion internally often means less congestion in the skin.
Both turmeric and ginger are rich in antioxidants that neutralize the environmental and metabolic stress your skin faces on a daily basis.
Taken consistently, this shot becomes a daily act of tending to yourself.
awakening your energy
There is nothing wrong with a cup of coffee, in fact, coffee actually has some impressive beneficial qualities. It is the fact that we reach for caffeine the minute we open our eyes and need additional cups to get us through the day. Having a “glow shot” before your morning coffee can change the biochemical conversation completely.
Ginger is a natural stimulant that works by improving circulation, and reducing the inflammatory fatigue that contributes to us feeling consistently tired, or even depleted. When I have them consistently, I feel a sustained, clean increase of energy.
Turmeric supports our mitochondrial health. You know, the powerhouse of the cell (word to middle school biology). But these tiny energy producing structures are present in every cell and by reducing oxidative stress at the cellular level, turmeric helps your body to produce energy more efficiently over time. Not the kind of energy you will feel in 30 minutes, but the kind that you will feel in a month. Real energy doesn’t come as a spike. It rises slowly and stays with you.
Ginger Turmeric Glow Shot Recipe
INGREDIENTS (makes ~2 shots)
2-inch knob fresh turmeric root
2-inch knob fresh ginger root
1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1 small pinch black pepper*
Optional: pinch of cayenne pepper
*Black pepper significantly enhances the absorption of curcumin
don’t forget the black pepper!
INSTRUCTIONS
Wash the roots but do not peel them because the skin holds nutrients.
Put the chopped roots in a juicer, or blend with 2 tbsp water (coconut water is good for electrolytes and hydration) and strain through a nut milk bag.
Stir in orange juice, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if using.
Store the remainder in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Turning This Into a Daily Beauty Ritual
The difference between a habit and a ritual is the quality of attention that you bring into it. A habit is something that you do a ritual is something that you embody.
You can make your shots in a batch on Sunday evening. It takes about 15 minutes to do four days worth of shots. You can fill small glass jars that are waiting for you in the fridge. The act of making them becomes part of the ritual itself. The smell of fresh ginger, the vivid orange stains of turmeric on your fingers and the dopamine hit from preparing something that will nourish you all week.
Consistency is everything. These roots work cumulatively. Each day building on the last. Notice the shift in luminosity in your skin first. Then the quality of your energy. Finally, the inflammation in your body will start to settle.
Try this for yourself tomorrow morning. Let me know how much you loved them because I know you will!
final notes
A quick note on sourcing, fresh is best. Look for firm, fragrant roots at your local farmers market or natural grocery store. If fresh isn’t accessible, high-quality organic turmeric and ginger powders mixed in warm water are good options as well.
If you are pregnant, on blood thinners or managing a health condition, speak with your healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement.
